Situated in the central area of the country, Marche Region is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea to the East.
Except for the long coastal strip the land is mountainous or hilly, including deep river gorges, the best known are those of the Furlo, the Rossa and the Frasassi.
This region has a multi-faceted beauty thanks to its cliffs and caves that overlook unforgettable beaches, hills that are steeped in history, rich traditions and culture.
Marche offers several seaside resorts of incomparable beauty, as Senigallia, Gabicce Mare, Pesaro and San Benedetto del Tronto. And not to be forgotten is the astonishing Conero Riviera with its amazing landscapes.
Marche is also art cities, strong traditions and historic centers.
What to do
Starting from the art and the history, Marche offers some tourist destinations of great value, as Ascoli Piceno, with its medieval historic centre and Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, Ancona where the Cathedral of San Ciriaco can be visited and is considered one of the most interesting medieval church. An incredible treasure is the historic center of Urbino, a Unesco World Heritage Site, with its Palazzo Ducale and the National Gallery of Marche.
For those who love classical music Pesaro is the perfect city, where to stay. Home of Gioacchino Rossini, it hosts the Rossini Opera Festival every year. Near Pesaro is located the wonderful “Rocca” of Gradara and its walled village that represents one of the medieval structures better conserved in Italy . Marche is also limpid and crystal-clear sea, perfect for a summer holiday and outdoor activities like canoeing, windsurfing and scuba-diving. This region offers also some natural parks, as the Monti Sibillini National Park and the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga National Park.
What to taste
The tradition of Marche region is strong and rich and includes many different recipes. Typical of Ascoli area is the “Oliva all’ascolana”, olive stuffed with meat, while from the Province of Pesaro and Urbino comes the Casciotta d’Urbino cheese, the favourite of Michelangelo, and the famous “crescia sfogliata”.
That excellent food is accompanied by high quality wines as Rosso Piceno, Vernaccia, Bianchello del Metauro and Colli Pesaresi.
