Abruzzo is located in central Italy and it extends from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. This territory is mostly mountainous and wild, but on the West there is a lovely coastline, that includes long and sandy beaches to the North and pebbly beaches to the South.
The natural landscapes of this region are breathtaking, you will see awesome mountains, hills and a rich variety of animal species in three natural reserves: the National Park of Abruzzo, the Park of Gran Sasso and the Laga Mountains and the Park of Mount Majella.
At the same time in the mountain area it’s possible to find tourist resorts and well-equipped facilities for skiing and winter sports in locations as Pescasseroli, Rivisondoli and Roccaraso
What to do:
Starting from the old little rural villages of the main land, Abruzzo offers a wide range of opportunities to have great holidays. Towns as L’Aquila, Chieti and Teramo host artistic beauties as medieval cathedrals, remains of the Roman Empire, castles and basilicas.
The coast is well-equipped for several sea sports and for sunbathing as well, while the inland is perfect to practice many sports in contact with nature: walks, excursions, mountain biking or trekking in natural and protected parks as the National Park of Abruzzo.
In the wintertime this region is perfect for skiing lovers: the highest peaks of the Apennines offers renowned tourist resorts as Roccaraso, Pescasseroli and Campo Imperatore.
What to taste:
Abruzzo’s cuisine is renowned for its variety and richness, thanks to its rich culinary tradition. Starting from the “maccheroni alla chitarra”, home-made pasta cut on a particular machine with thin steel blades, to the “scrippelle” thin strips of pasta eaten in soup. Roast lamb is an ingredient used in many recipes as “Arrosticini”, skewered lamb dish, or “Agnello cacio e ovo”, a lamb-based fricasse, while in the coastal areas seafood is very popular, you will taste several types of the typical “Brodetto”, broths made by cooking different type of fish flavoured with many types of spices and herbs.
For wine lovers this region offers high quality wines, first of all Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.
